국립현대미술관 서울관은 미술관 건축물의 특성을 살리고 지리적 여건과 역사적 맥락을 고려하여 설계되었으며, '무형의 미술관', '일상 속의 미술관', '친환경 미술관'을 지향하고 있다. 건물 내외를 유기적으로 연결하고 다층적 용도로 활용할 수 있도록 마련된 6개의 마당 주위에 건물이 배치되어, 미술관과 관람객과의 관계정립에 대한 새로운 화두를 던지며 21세기 미래지향적 미술관의 새로운 가능성을 제시하고 있다. 서울관은 전시동 및 교육동을 비롯하여 디지털정보실, 다목적홀, 영화관 등 다양한 시설을 갖춘 복합문화예술센터이다.

The National Museum of Contemporary Art at Seoul uses the characteristics of a gallery in consideration to the geological and historical contexts of the site and pursues a ‘formless gallery’, a ‘gallery of everyday life’ and an ‘ecofriendly gallery’. The inside and outside spaces of the gallery are connected closely to one another. 6 different yards are placed around the building for multiple uses.These characters question the formal relationships between the gallery and the visitors and proposes a new possibility of a futuristic gallery in the 21st century.The center is an integrated culture and arts center that is equipped with various facilities including a multipurpose hall, a theater, an information lab and an education center.
