가락시장은 1986년 개장한 국내 최대규모이자 국내 1호 공영농수산물 도매시장으로 현재는 시설이 노후화 되면서 안전 문제, 낙후된 물류 시스템 등 각종 불편함을 겪고 있다. 따라서 가락시장 시설현대화사업을 통해 급변하는 유통환경에 대응하고 공영농수산물도매시장으로서의 제 역할(생산자에게 안정적인 수취가격을, 소비자에게 저렴한 가격에 농산물 제공)을 수행키 위해 2009년부터 현대화사업이 진행되고 있다. 현재 가락시장 시설현대화 사업 1단계 소매권 사업을 완료하고 2,3단계은 도매권사업이 진행중에 있으며, 도매권역 현대화사업은 도매시장 물류 기능 회복, 미래 유통 환경 변화 대응, 인근 시민과 상생 발전을 목표로 2025년까지 4공구로 나눠 순환재건축 방식으로 사업이 추진된다.

The Garak Market has opened in 1986 as the biggest scale farmers’ wholesale market domestically but has shown conspicuous problems in safety and cargo systems over the years, posing many difficulties to the people.Accordingly, a modernization project is ongoing to respond to the fluctuating needs in distribution so that the market could serve the role of providing a stable price for the farmers and offer reasonable prices to the consumers from 2009.Now, the 1st stage retail section project has been completed and the consecutive 2nd and 3rd wholesale section projects are proceeding.The wholesale section modernization project will restore its efficiency in the distribution of cargos, react to future needs in loading shipments, and coexist with the local people. Until 2025, 4 sections will be further divided and the project will be reconstructed in rotation.
